For Donnelly's exhibition, "Cows, Shadows, and More, " she choose cows as a subject matter because, she just loves them and has been enamored with them for many years. She is drawn to their easy lifestyle. Think of it, they don’t have to shop for food, clothing, or cook, and clean…or work!!!! They just stroll in the meadow and graze. But come to think of it, eating grass does not sound too appetizing. But, then again if you are a cow you probably love it. They are so innocent and have such marvelous angles and shapes. Yet they have a quiet sort of dignity. She loves the formations they create together. The shapes of their heads are amazing to Donnelly. As she was painting, Donnelly thought the angle or shape of that leg doesn’t seem right. But realized it was after studying her photos more closely. The positions they would get into looked impossible for their bodies and legs to achieve. "Could that be right?," Donnelly would say to herself. The answer was always… "Yes!" Donnelly also loves the endearing way they take care of their young. The babies cling to their mom’s bodies until able to be on their own.
Once when driving through Ohio, Donnelly came across many cows in a field and stopped, but didn’t have her camera. Another artist with her was out of film. She said she would check her purse to see if she had more film. Every cow in that meadow came up to that fence as she searched for a roll of film. There were at least 30 or 40 cows standing there gazing at them with their innocent eyes. Donnelly was so disappointed when her friend couldn't find more film. She couldn’t sleep that night thinking about a painting of that scene. The next morning, Donnelly started painting and did it mostly from memory. She did get a book of cows at the library to understand the shapes, but the rest was from memory. The title of that painting is “Innocent Eyes.” it is on display in this exhibit. Donnelly hopes viewers of her artwork can see and feel what she feels for these magnificent creatures.
