Christy Zucarelli

Artist Christy Zucarelli does not begin her work with preliminary sketches.  Rather, she begins with a mark.  This mark evolves into a collection of marks, which are influenced by intimate experiences, and an awareness of time, text, and man-made structure.  These elements are important to Zucarelli for they give her a place to begin. They have remained a constant in her work.  Although such elements stimulate Zucarelli and prompt her to begin a work they become secondary, a kind of backdrop, to the making of the work. Inevitably, the process takes first place.

Zucarelli is interested in surface, space, line and structure. While making a drawing she allows the line to dominate and pays close attention to the negative space, often, making certain to leave it untouched. She is constantly and obsessively gravitating toward the center of the paper, seeking a sense of stability and placement. Her medium varies from elementary school pencils to lipsticks borrowed from her vanity. Zucarelli is attracted to these materials for a number of reasons… the pencil is simple and pure, the lipstick sensual and inviting. She is attached to both in a very personal way.

In Zucarelli's work, it is important, in regard to the line, that she attains a certain degree of spontaneity and grace as well as a level of movement. During the act of drawing (and painting) she continuse to make choices such as: will the line be active or still?  will it repeat or stand alone?  Such choices lead to gestures, which are guided by feeling, but they are always subject to conscious judgment. Little that remains in a finished piece is therefore, accidental. The entire process leads toward a completed piece, which remains in a constant state of flux until it is fully resolved.
