Hicks
Painter
Justin Hicks paints. He uses many resources for his
images; National Geographic magazine, art history
books, various collected objects, novels, etc.. "Order
and Chaos," and the balance of the two, is a
major theme that Hicks focuses on in his work. It's
a "simple" Taoist idea. Within this broad
framework of opposite forces he builds, destroys,
speaks, listens, masks and reveals. Hicks' work leans
heavily towards surrealism, and has elements that
are nonsensical, and purely abstract, yet every piece
also has narrative elements, some more than others.
His approach to image making is meditative, and often
spontaneous. He usually makes bold "moves"
when working on a piece. Hicks allows for things to
change in his paintings, and often finds a picture
moving in unexpected directions. Ultimately, Hicks
paints because it takes him somewhere outside himself,
or is it deeper inside himself? It could be both simultaneously.
When he returns he feels transformed. Painting is
a need for him. It brings internal balance. It's healthy,
and is good for the soul.
