Acrylic and Pastel on Paper

Jackie Hoysted

Jackie Hoysted attends weekly figure drawing sessions where she draws from life with the objective of creating a painting that remains firmly within the realm of drawing. Each work is created on paper and is executed in a single session. The resulting images are a celebration of the fresh, decision-making process combined with the richness of color and texture offered by paint. Hoysted's works are playful, sensuous and moody - sometimes fierce, sometimes soft, but always highly sensitive. During the long pose, both model and artist, falls into a reverie and loses any of sense of self-consciousness. The model assumes a nakedness and a "vacant-ness" on which Hoysted projects her own emotions. The result is an outward manifestation of the artist imprinted on the form of the model. Achieving a likeness to the model is not her concern and she doesn't care if she misrepresents the body - Hoysted's goal is to capture passion, mood, and place with a minimalist approach to mark making.

Hoysted was born in Dublin, Ireland and currently lives in Gaithersburg, MD. She graduated with an Associate of Fine Arts Degree from the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington DC. Her works have been selected for several juried exhibitions both at a national level and throughout the DC metropolitan area including the 2009 National Art of Recovery, ArtMD08, The Art League VA, The Capitol Hill Art League DC, and The Delaplaine Arts Center MD. She has participated in a variety of outreach efforts including Artomatic 2007 and 2008, Art Anonymous, Art Now for Autism, and the Whitman Walker Art for Life Program.

Hoysted's recent juried exhibitions includes Afternoons - Where Drawing Meets Painting at The Fisher Gallery, Schlesinger Arts Center, Northern Virginia Community College, Blurring The Lines at Dumbarton Concert Gallery in DC, and Totally Mixed Media at Gaithersburg City Hall, MD. She also has upcoming solo exhibitions for her figure drawings in January 2010 at the Gardiner Gallery at the Delaplaine Arts Education Center in Frederick, MD and Glenview Mansion in Rockville, MD. Her series Ashes to Ashes - Send Me Your Last Cigarette will be exhibited at the Erik Laurizten Gallery, Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno, NV in February 2011.

Her artwork has also been featured in the Gazette, the Washington City Paper, the Falls Church News-Press, and the Westmeath Examiner, ireland.
