Missenda
Missenda
is pulled by nature. Photographing it becomes like
a whirling-dervish turning. She gets lost in the fullness.
The shapes, colors, and patterns speak to Missenda
of an unseen hand at work. The
process of Missenda's photography is similar to composing
a song. From rhythm to chords to melody, the organic
nature of the creation; from the heart through the
fingers to the printed surface, echoes of our potential
to create beauty.
As an Ilfochrome Printer, the nature of light and
Missenda's understanding of it play a large role in
the process of her craft. Ilfochrome printing is a
positive photographic process. It is described as
"painting with light." By using a transparency
as a template, Missenda manipulates the light to create
balanced images on a 2 dimensional plane.
Visual Rhythms, exhibited in May 2004, emerged
from Missenda's study of light and it's affects on
film and paper. Through the understanding of light
in an additive process, Missenda used a multiple exposure
technique where each image was made up of 20 - 30
exposures. By relying on her instincts of beauty,
rhythm, pattern and color, Missenda built her images
with the found objects surrounding her.
Visual Harmony, Missenda's current series of
work, is an exploration of rhythm and harmony as they
blend into one another. Like the Visual Rhythm's Series,
each image from Visual Harmony is made as a multiple
exposure. To further emphasize the relationship of
rhythm and harmony, each image is then layered with
a black and white negative and printed on Ilfochrome
paper.
Missenda's work is the celebration of the natural
world. Her images sing to us, allowing the opportunity
to really observe the glory of light, texture and
color around us. Missenda is currently working on
the 3rd part of her Visual Images Series.
