Mark Alan Bednar

Bednar's approach to painting is to use process - driven abstraction to study forms, reduced to their essential movements, as being incorporated into their surroundings. This is realized through changes in rhythm, texture, shape and color. Integration of the elements into a unified whole, as opposed to "subject" and background" or "positive shape" and "negative space" is the underlying goal of the current work.

The elements in the current series, called "Constructions," are derived from people, architecture, animals and fantasy landscapes. The series is called "Constructions" because Bednar envisions the pieces as being assembled through repeated applications of glazes, drips, impasto and heavy brushwork over a sketched in structure. This series is derived from earlier pieces done in a similar manner, but where the main emphasis was placed on active surface texture.
