Fifis
Michelle
Fifis is the lead designer and founder of FiFi handbags,
a design company that produces hand-painted pieces.
Using such techniques as batik, hand-painting, bleaching,
beading, layering and embroidery, Michelle creates
handbags that can be hung as a work of art. As a fashion
design student at Stephens College, Michelle was creating
wall hangings that caught the eye of many. Wanting
to use these images in her day-to-day life, Michelle
took the pieces off the wall and began to sew handbags.
After her internship with textile designer, Zandra
Rhodes, Michelle was inspired to go out on her won
and use her designs in the shapes and forms that she
chose. In just over a year FiFi handbags has expanded
to twenty-one stores nationwide, including the Milwaukee
Art Museum. Michelle has been nominated for numerous
design awards, including the FGI Rising Star Award
and the BAD Association. Recent gallery shows include
the Denise Barn Fine Art Gallery and the BoxHeart
Gallery. Michelle continues to paint on canvas and
recently moved to Portland, Oregon.
