Peterson
Max
Peterson has been working with wood as long as he
can remember. At the age of sixteen he apprenticed
to the owner of a small woodwarking company in Iowa,
and worked his way through high school, college, and
graduate school with that company. During a long career
in higher education, he continued to maintain an active
workshop and an interest in furniture making. Peterson
and his wife, Linda, formed Max Woodworking in 1995
specializing in uniuely designed, beautifully crafted
furniture. Peterson teaches woodworking at The Society
for Contemporary Craft in Pittsburgh and a variety
of woodworking courses in his own studio. He has given
presentations for the Woodworking Shows, and at many
meetings of local woodworking and woodturning organizations.
His work has been shown locally, but his clients can
be found as far away as China. Working in a style
that has been termed "eclectic," Peterson
favors clean, contemporary lines with the absence
of superfluous ornamentation. His goal is to reflect
or amplify the setting and the people who commission
the work. The content may range from highly charged
symbolism to pure whimsical humor. He has a strong
commitment to sustainability, and favors woods and
materials indigenous to the area where the pieces
will reside.
