I
have the duty of describing the experience of looking
at these paintings: When considering all of the paintings
together, there are groups that cluster together,
because of their particular motifs or compositions.
However, the cohesion of the entire group is dependent
on the perceptual depth and the mark. When reading
the paintings, I am first struck with the manner in
which the pigments vibrate. This vibration creates
a particular perceptual depth. Therefore, the paintings
are neither flat, nor do they have a deep three dimensional
space carved into them. This particular depth is most
common to "Color Field" painting. Color Field painting,
via this perceptual depth, presents me with a vantage
point for reading these paintings. Perception is the
act of looking. To view critically, we must be conscious
of our position as the viewer.
After noticing the perceptual depth, of the painting,
I notice the mark. Once the mark is realized, I can
no longer sustain the position that I am viewing a
Color Field painting. The mark is short, repetitive,
and structured. These marks are what make the pigments
vibrate. They are records of their own creation.
