Sarah Wiseman

"Contemplations on State of Being," is a series by artist Sarah Wiseman that investigates the relationship between place and thoughts. Looking to the outside world to structure and ground her internal perceptions of culture, existence, migration, patterns, and movement and asking questions about our relationship to the world around us, Wiseman's artwork is the plate form for this internal discussion. The surface is worked like the act of mulling over an event or feeling. Each layer is continually marked out, painted over, and sanded through in a search to reveal and conceal this dialogue. Searching to make her contemplative spaces tangible is the impetus for the thread line and how the two-dimensional plane becomes an object. The forms used in this series reoccurred during a period of travel and the connections sparked the visual investigation. Leading towards the creation of archetypal images, Wiseman is continually searching for the quite, contemplative, and peaceful states of being.

Wiseman received her BFA from Central Michigan University in 2002 and her MFA from the University of Alabama in 2007. Recently, she was an artist in residence at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts where she was an active artist, teacher, and community member. Wiseman has exhibited her work nationally at galleries and museums such as the Finer Things Gallery, Nashville, TN; City Art Gallery, Columbia, SC; Sabatini Gallery, Topeka, KS; and at Ann Arbor Art Center, MI. She is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, Louisiana.
