Jan
and Jill Shropshire
Shropshire
Studio has created a sophisticated whimsical line
of functional and decorative objects for the home.
Their artwork has a youthful appeal while maintaining
its practicality. Strong emphasis is placed on color
and form for an organic and graceful outcome.
Jan and Jill Shropshire are a sister team of artists.
Their influences range from Vincent Van GoghÕs paintings
to their father's taxidermy work! They have combined
their individual talents to create uncommon works
of art. Each piece is made with a purpose, a search
for beauty. Jill hand makes each piece out of stoneware
by coil building or throwing on the wheel. She then
enhances it by adding details such as feet, handles,
and spouts. The artwork is carved or embossed with
stamps of rich texture that invite the observer to
touch and explore its surface. She then turns the
piece over to Jan who has a background as a painter.
Jan employs a rarely used technique of creating colored
slip and applying it in layers. The layers dry and
are rubbed away for a multitonal effect, creating
a one-of-a-kind work of art.
