Mundok
The
greatest things in life happen in an instant. A spark
of love, the moment of conception, the birth of ideas,
news ways to think, see, move and create. A dancer
or jazz musician acknowledges and strings these instances
together in an outward flow of emotion, celebrating
all that has been set before them and resides within
them. This too happens with painting, and is painting;
responding to these spark impulses with color, line,
rhythm, and balance!
Mundok's
current works were created during his time living
in San Francisco. These paintings reflect a great
chapter in his life. Mundok's changed subject matter
and surroundings focused his landscape painting technique.
Once feeling that a landscape was really just a location
brought to life through three different variables:
a walking plane, an airy top and uprights to move
through, California' s sloping hills and rolling valleys
only provided two of those variables. - The longing
for Pittsburgh began. -
Mundok painted, with the familiar city in the background
of his mind, yet allowed San Francisco to offer itself
to him. What did San Francisco have that Pittsburgh
did not? The weather accommodated Mundok. For the
first time, Mundok could paint out doors. The wind
might move a drip of paint or the light might affect
the color palette. In addition, Mundok lived on an
island in the middle of the Bay and was able to watch
the ever changing horizon. This environment helped
him move the progression of his style along. Growing
from a figurative and angular style to a fluid and
organic style, the art began to mirror his life.
Through all this, Mundok still missed Pittsburgh.
He missed the freedom in Pittsburgh to paint for himself,
the freedom to be his own artist and not succumb to
the pressure of the business of art, and the freedom
to work with other artists. Collaborations are a great
meeting of the minds, allowing beautiful and open
dialogues and the interchanging of ideas.
Mundok has been an active participant in the Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania art scene for well over four years. In
this time, he has been involved in as many art events
and collaborative works as possible. Known best for
his intricate line and detail work, collaborative
murals can be found through out the city of Pittsburgh.
Private collections of his works can be found in Belgium,
France and across the United States. He has exhibited
in New York, North Carolina, West Virginia, Pennsylvania,
Maryland, San Francisco and Canada. Mundok's work
demonstrates both balance and emotional expression
of the moment and seamlessly combines a history of
styles from hieroglyphic to futuristic.
