Vladimir
Zuev
Zuev's
work combines hundreds of sketches made both from
nature and his imagination. When working with the
human figure, Zuev finds himself assigning a certain
"abstract sign" to the drawing in which the model
will come to embody. For Zuev, all the characteristics
of the sign are important: its configuration, structure,
force of tone, etc. While in the process of drawing
the figure, Zuev creates another "graphic personage."
This time from torn pieces of paper, elements of architecture,
or any subjects, the new unexpected abstract form
is manifested to deduce the original sign of the figure
first created. For Zuev, the conversation on his graphic
sheet between the two abstract signs becomes his language.
The signs often stand in full contrast to one another
and then can sometimes - on the contrary - be identical,
repeating each other like an echo. In both cases,
the signs remain completely independendt from each
other, yet inseparable elements of the new graphic
sheet. Zuev's work comes together like a game with
its share of irony and pranks. Both the figures and
the forms characteristic of his etchings, wood cuts
and paintings share an irony in the silhouettes of
the human figures, in the mime of the faces and even
in the titles he gives his work.
